Cold & Flu Season Hits Hard

Illness has hit Division 2 hard the last couple of weeks.  It's been a revolving door of absences.  Just a reminder to wash your hands throughout the day, but especially before eating.  Also, if your child is sick at home, once they are back, they will need to catch up on the lessons they missed (if not the assignments).  This is especially true with subjects like math and French where new material is covered each period.

The Pop Choir performed Hedley's "Anything" at the assembly today.  They did a fantastic job!  You can catch them performing again at the "Pink Day" assembly at the end of February.

There are a ton of  assignments coming due in the next few weeks.  I will update the calendar tomorrow, so be sure to check back then.

Things on the Go!

In the Friday Folder that went home last week, you may have noticed some information on the Writing Contest.  Both Gr. 6 and 7 students have also started a social studies project.  The project sheet and due dates should make their way home tomorrow if they haven't already.  There are a lot of things on the go with Lit Circles, Writing Contest, French Projects, and Social Studies projects all rolling.  Encourage your child to work on a portion of one of these assignments (or many of these assignments) each day rather than saving them all until the end.  Time management skills start now!

New Beginings for the New Year

Literature Circles start today!  Each student was assigned one of the three books they requested from our collection.  The theme of all the novels is: "The Popularity Problem."  Please ask your child to show you the reading schedule and outline for the unit.  Students are asked to stay on schedule and not read ahead.  Discussions are every Monday and Thursday.   It may help many students to read while listening to the audiobook.  The Vancouver Public Library has downloadable copies of, The Outsiders, Stargirl, and Loser. Miss Kelly has a CD copy of The Misfits to share as well.

Students are also working on a piece of writing for the TD Book Week Writing Contest.  Info will be sent home in the Friday Folders this week.  Everyone in the class will be submitting a piece of writing no longer than 1 500 words.  It can be fiction or non-fiction in any format, as long as its theme is "water." We encourage you to ask your child about it.

In science, we are starting Miss Kelly's famous classification unit.  Students will continue their study of living things in detail, learning not just how, but why we classify living things the way we do, and why it is important.

Upcoming Dates:
Jan 16 - Problem Solving Test
Jan 16 - Tupper Coming to Visit
Jan 22 - Gr. 7s going to Hamber
Jan 28 - Water Writing Due
Feb 2 - French Fashion Project Due

Don't forget skating is coming up as well.  If you'd like to volunteer to join us, we could use your help tying skates!  :)

Have a great week!

Happy New Year

Today was a great start to 2015!  While the students continue working on the goals they set in term 1, they also spent some time reflecting on their report cards and the things they'd like to work on in the coming term.  We will be reviewing their ideas this week.

This week will also be the beginning of Literature Circles.  Miss Kelly and I have been searching for a collection of great books for the kids to choose from. (I may have shed a tear or two on the beach during the holidays while previewing a few of them.)  Look for the assignment sheet and timeline on Monday next week.

Upcoming due dates:
Friday, Jan 9th - Grade 7 Social Studies Early Man Project
Friday, Jan 9th - Science Potato Lab Due
Monday, Jan 12th - Grade 6 Math Test on Estimation, Rounding, and Integers
Monday, Jan 12th - Extreme Environment Essay Final Copy Due with Bibliography

Happy New Year!
