Gettin' Funky

We are looking forward to getting funky at this week's Afternoon of Dance at Gladstone Secondary School on Wednesday afternoon!  The show starts at 1:00 pm and we encourage everyone to come.  Kids have been working hard and look really good.  We have asked that everyone wear black, with a hat and any kind of shoes that can be danced in (the funkier the better).  Look for a video of the dance on the blog next week!

Wednesday is also the due date for our Refugee essay.  Friday is the due date for Gr. 7 Social Studies assignment number 5.  The following week, our Independent Novel Study books should be finished on Friday as well.

This past Thursday, Division 2 hosted an amazing science fair.  Students learned and taught each other about various forms of creating electricity.  Ms. Raino and I were especially impressed by the way our students were able to explain their projects to our Grade 2 buddy class.  They should be very proud!

Have a great week!

Uptown Funk Fun!

Division 2 is getting funky!  As you may know, we have been working on a dance to "Uptown Funk" in class.  Ruby & Jessica, two of our Grade 6 students, choreographed the dance for their PE lesson and the class was so good that we have entered it into the Vancouver Elementary Physical Activity Association's Afternoon of Dance at Gladstone.  We will be in the company of many other elementary and high school dancers.  It should be a great time!  The show is Wednesday, April 27th at Gladstone Secondary School from 1 - 2:30.  We'd love parent drivers (leaving at 12:15), but you are also welcome to just come and cheer us on!  They are pretty awesome.

Hello, Good Bye

We have a bit of a mixed message today.  Caroline, our SSW has left General Wolfe.  We are very sad to see her go as she was a huge asset to our classroom and worked with many students in the class.  On the flip side, we are pleased to announce that Ms. H. is taking her place in the class.  She comes to us from Henderson Annex and we are excited to get to know her.  Welcome to Division 2!

Coming up this week:
  • ACE Reports continue each day this week.
  • Novel Study weekly reading
  • Kids Book for library for Wednesday
  • First draft of the 5-paragraph essay for Wednesday
  • Scholastic Orders due Thursday
  • Social Studies 7 Assignment 4 is due next Tuesday
There is early dismissal on Wednesday and Thursday this week for Student-Led Conferences.  Division 2 will be hosting an Open House, so come in any time.  Also a reminder about the Professional Days this Friday and Monday.  Teachers will be spending Friday looking at the new curriculum together and taking other courses on Monday.  We look forward to sharing our new knowledge with the class in the coming weeks.

What's Happening in Div 2 This Week

April is filling up already!  Students went home with Student Led Conference Forms today.  Like in past years, we will be hosting an Open House where students can brag to their parents about all the amazing things they are working on.  Miss Kelly and Mrs. Soper will be available to answer any questions and add to the bragging too!  We hope to see you.

Students are continuing to work on their Inquiry Projects and have moved to the essay phase.  Everyone should have a thesis statement for a 5-paragraph essay and an outline complete for Tuesday, when they start the actual writing process.  We have been very impressed with the maturity and thought that students have put into their notes so far.

In French, Ms. Raino has the kids working on weather reports.  Feel free to ask your child about the weather today in French!  Parents, you all should have seen a Novel Study Sheet come home for you to sign.  We are starting an Independent Novel Study assignment where students get to choose a novel and share it with us through various assignments.  Check it out!

Grade 7 parents, a letter went home today regarding Stepping Up on June 28th.  Please send your child's current photo and baby photo to steppingup@vsb.bc.ca by Friday, April 15th to be included in the slide show.  Grade 6 parents and students, just a reminder that term three of Grade 6 is the first report card that mini-schools look at when selecting applicants for their programs.  High school is coming!

Have a great week!
