Some Cool Sites

Thanks for all your attention and care at the Goal Setting Conferences.  The students have set some great goals and we will continue to work on them this term.  To assist with those goals and for general help, we've put together a list of websites that can reinforce what we are learning in class, help study for tests, or just practice skills.  Check them out:

Duolingo - For practicing French
Quizlet - To create your own flashcards
Free Rice - Multiplication, grammar, French, and various other practice site
Typing Practice
Khan Academy - Various subjects
MathLinks 7 - Online quizzes for each chapter, student games and worksheets
Science Probe 6 - Online quizzes for each chapter

If you have any others that you like, please share them with us!

Goal Setting Conferences

We are so excited to be meeting everyone for goal setting conferences this week!  Students have been thinking about their life goals and dreams, and brainstorming ways that they could help make them a reality.  Students and parents, with help from Miss Kelly and Mrs. Soper will also be composing an academic or work habits goal to work on during the rest of term one as well.

Miss Kelly is busily marking the students' "Day I Was Born" projects this week.  The students should be very proud of all their hard work.  We will spend a little time reflecting on how students' feel they did on their project and what they could change next time.  Hopefully they learned a lot about themselves and about how to do a big project.

This week, we'd love for you to ask your child about "10 000 Hours."  What have you put 10 000 hours into?

The Last Days of Day I Was Born

Last Week of Day I Was Born!

The countdown is on for the Day I Was Born project. This is one of the larger projects of the year and Miss Kelly and Mrs. Soper have been very impressed with the work students have completed in class so far!  We can't wait to see the finished products.  Just a reminder that the object of this project (aside from learning about the day you were born) is learning how to research.  While there are a lot of items to find, the majority is pretty straightforward. Students need to ensure that they don't miss any aspects of the project in order to meet expectations. They also need a complete MLA bibliography (we have been using bibme.org at school).  If your child is done or almost done, encourage them to take the time to see where they can add more detail, photos, or extra facts.  And of course, proofreading is a must!  Parent editors are welcome, but be careful not to change your child's words.

In Language Arts, we have been reading a book set partly in Zimbabwe.  It has brought up a lot of issues about poverty and how fortunate we are.  We've begun talking about "First World problems" to put some perspective on how lucky we are. We encourage you to ask your child about the book or about some things they are grateful for.

And finally,  we are so proud of how well Division 2 did at the Walkathon!!!  Everyone tried their best and really contributed to the class totals. Whether we win for the most laps or not, it was great fun!  And thank you to parents and family members who donated.  Fingers crossed for laptops!
