Genius Hour

Wow!  I can't tel you how impressed I was by the students' Genius Hour presentations today.  I feel inspired, and hopeful about the fate of the world.  We have:

  • #pickitup where you collect garbage while on a walk and then share it on social media
  • The Straw Solution a solution to carry your reusable straw with you
  • An anti-technology campaign
  • An anonymous crime stoppers app idea
  • #dontswear
  • 10 Steps to Waste Reduction and using less plastic
  • Tree planting
  • Raising money for B.C. Children's Hospital through selling flowers, cookies, and blueberries
  • Cyberbullying awareness
  • Solutions to feeding the homeless including care packages and even neighbourhood food sharing
  • Reducing waste by using mechanical pencils
  • Entertaining senior citizens
  • Sharing Kindness (look for the signs at Nesters)
  • Ideas for saving our oceans
  • Donating to charities including: Covenant House, S.P.C.A, Vancouver Rape Relief & Women's Shelter, and more
We appreciate your support for your child's charitable endeavours and we look forward to hearing about how they turn out in September.

Consent Discussion

Today in class we began discussing the concept of consent.  The concept was introduced by Saleema Noon earlier this year.  I've asked the class to go home and discuss this idea with you.  At this age, discussion is mostly about personal space and privacy, but its also about control.  It means that if you feel uncomfortable about someone touching you, you have the right to say no thank you, and that includes hugs from neighbours, holding hands with friends, all the way to sex.  In additional we watched a video entitled "Cup of Tea".  (Please be aware that there are many altered versions of this video.  Including one that includes many swears - we saw the first 15-seconds of the swearing version by accident today despite my pre-screening!)  The "Cup of Tea" video is meant to demonstrate how crazy not getting consent would be.   Later this week we will be viewing this video about consent and discussing our rights, and ways to protect our bodies.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Soper or Miss Kelly.

Homework Board - Mon, June 4th

Wow!  We had a fantastic morning with Maestro Bramwell Tovey of the V.S.O.  The kids were attentive and enthusiastic.   What a great way to get to know classical music.

Students should be working on a number of projects at the moment.  They have a Chemistry project, their final ADST, and their Genius Hour projects all due before the end of the year.  Ask them about what they are doing!

In French, we are learning to decode new words through the Matt Maxwell song Les Couleurs.  Check out the link!
