Tues, May 1

We still have a bunch of kids who have not yet submitted their baby and current photos for the Stepping Up slide show even though the deadline was today! Please make this a priority, as we want to include every child if possible.  We are happy to scan photos if digital ones aren’t available.

Thanks for your support.

Novel Study Final Project

Novel Study projects have officially begun! Good job Division 1 for reading your novel and getting those Reading Powers and Dear Author letters in on time. We have officially launched our creative Novel Study projects and there are some important dates to remember (see calendar below).
Students should be inquiring about what they would like to do for their project. It is important that they focus on the themesettingcharacter(s), point of view and plot (conflict and resolution) of the novel. I have provided a handout for the students to brainstorm and organize their information (I highly recommend that they start with that handout before beginning their projects).
Here are my two hints about how you should choose what to do for your project:
1. Your creative project should make sense to your novel. Some of the students are thinking about creating a board game, but it may not make sense for their particular novel because there are minimal characters or a “weak” plot lineThink about what will work for your particular novel.
2. Students should create a project that build on their strengths. Create something that you are good at. For the students who enjoy art, incorporate your art skills into your project. For the students who are good at technology, use technology to create your project. You know yourself best, so show your best work!
I’m excited to see the finished products because I know they will be amazing.

Good Luck Division 1!!
Ms. Manhas

Thurs, April 25

Wow!  That’s all I can say... Today’s Science Fair was amazing. We are very proud of all the kids’ contributions and of their growing confidence sharing their ideas and learning. Well done everyone and thanks to all the parents who helped!

Tues, April 23rd

While we didn’t get a photo of the homework board today, there is definitely math homework (4.1in the textbook).  Today was also our Science Fair dress rehearsal.  Many kids probably have some things they want to improve on their posters now that they have seen other classes work.  Today the first SS mini project was due.  Kids started the second one today!

Just a reminder that you are all invited to our Science Fair in the gym Thursday from 1-3. Hope to see you there.

Open House Tomorrow 2:30-6:30

Don’t forget tomorrow is early dismissal and our class’ Open House.  Hope you can join us!

Great Resource for Searching the Internet for Information

Hey all,

Just wanted to encourage kids to use kiddle.  It's a search engine that vets websites and filters out sites that are too difficult.  I think it could really help for both science fair and social studies projects.  Check it out!

Wed, April 10

Today was another amazing visit to Youville Residences. It’s so nice to see relationships building and the students getting more comfortable with the residents. We had kids playing hockey, crafting, colouring, dancing, gardening,  playing the piano, and sometimes just visiting with the seniors there. It was awesome. Your kids are amazing.

Tonight, those amazing kids should be reviewing long division with decimals and working on their science fair projects.  We have also started our novel study, so everyone should have reading to do at home.  20 minutes of homework tonight for sure!

Science Fair Prep

I noticed that there was a surprising number of blank science fair poster boards in the classroom when I left this afternoon.  There is only 1 more work period left (out of a total of 4).  Every child should be working at least 20-minutes every night on their boards.  The work has been done, but they need to add extra details and make it look amazing!  Get to work!

Stepping Up Preparation

It's time to start thinking and preparing for Stepping Up!   Stepping Up is our ceremony celebrating your child moving on to high school.  We will be having a ceremony on Wednesday, June 26th at 9:30, with cake and refreshments in the gym after that. At 11am, the kids change out of their Stepping Up duds and into beach wear as we head to Kits Beach to celebrate their final days at General Wolfe.  If you are interested in helping to coordinate Stepping Up (food, beverages, decorations, etc.), please contact myself or Ms. Nichols.

Also, we are collecting photos for our annual Gr. 7 Slide Show.  Please email us a baby photo and a current photo of your child to steppingup@vsb.bc.ca before April 30th to be included.

Welcome Ms. Manhas!

Hi Parents & Guardians,

Just here to say a friendly hello!

My name is Ms. Manhas and I am a student teacher from UBC’s Education Program. I have had the privilege of being placed in Division 1 for my practicum here at General Wolfe. I am beyond excited to learn and grow from my time here at the school, both from the staff and the students. I have been in and out of the classroom since October of last year and I am beyond excited to teach (full time) in this fabulous class. Some of the up and coming projects that I will be working on with the students will be: Independent Novel Studies, poetry exploration, engaging in a unit about outer space and dabbling into the field of career education.

Thanks for welcoming me to the General Wolfe family and I look forward to future encounters.

Please feel free to contact me at any time at emanhas@vsb.bc.ca.

Looking forward to a great few months!

Tues, April 2 & Mental Health Resources

Thank you to Hamber's Here 4 Peers program who came in today to talk to us about mental health.  It was a really well organised and interesting program and we learned a lot.  It's a good reminder that we all need to take care of our mental health, and we all have times in our lives where we need help!  Here are a few resources for when we do:
