June is Here!

There is a ton happening in our favourite month of the year!  Check out the calendar for important dates.  It's also time to start thinking about camp.  Be sure and check the packing list, and take special notice of the heat treatment room information.  There are also two assemblies, a Service Assembly on Friday, June 9th and one on the last day of school as well.

Greeting Cards for the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre

Attention all Division 2 friends and family:

Something special came home in your Friday folder this week!  Every student received a copy of the greeting card they created out of their poverty themed watercolour.   They turned out amazingly well and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share with the world while raising money for such a great cause.   Please consider buying a set (or a two, or three...) of cards.  100% of the profits from the cards go straight to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre.   (Please note, only 25% of special items ordered online will go to our charity.)  Special thanks to our Artist in Residence Susan MacCullum and Marcelle at The Card Project for all your support!

Check out the order form that went home Friday, our display beside the office, or our table at the Spring Concert tomorrow night!

Lots of great stuff happening right now.  Our poverty essays are almost done, our novel study projects are under way, and we are ready to start something new and great in social studies.  And of course, Sports Day is on Friday!

Have a great week!

Executive Functioning

There are so many things happening in this last couple months at school, I need to practice my executive functioning!  If you or your kid is struggling to get to school on time, or keep track of notices, homework, etc. then check out this great article!

Ms. Husdon, our resource teacher, also recommended a great tutor to help kids with executive function challenges.  Claudia Smith from Compass Clinic specializes in developing all aspects of executive functioning.   Who knew?!

Also, we are still working on developing our math fact automaticity.  We started the year with only one student (William!) who met expectations for math fact fluency.  We now have 6!  Many of the grade 7 students are only a fact or two away, but the majority of our grade 6 students (with the exception of Kiyara!) are not even close.  Now is a great time to buckle down and strengthen those facts.  The grade 7s can start high school with their fact tool box full, and the grade 6s can start grade 7 without any math fact barriers.  5 minutes a day is all you need!

VPD Visit

We had an amazing presentation today from the Vancouver Police Department about Cyber Safety.   It was very informative, but also very intense.  The kids had an hour's worth of questions after the presentation.  The questions ranged from how many Instragram followers you should have to what was pornography and why did it exist?  (And genius... why does Google even let you search it!)  Your child may have more questions brewing.   Please be aware, and perhaps even monitor their computer use for a couple weeks, or ask them about their followers: Do they know them all?  Is there anyone who has been pursuing their "friendship" online?  Are they worried about their online interactions?  It's a crazy new world out there!

On a lighter note, we had a great morning at the Vancouver School Board putting up our art.  Thank you to the parents who took time out this morning to drive us there and back.  We couldn't have done it without you!  The students should be very proud of their outstanding artwork, and writing.  It just gets me more excited for their coming Inquiry Project essays!  Here's a selection, but visit the School Board offices for a closer look.  It's worth it!

Poverty Watercolour Art Displayed

A special thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to drive and help on Wednesday as we hang our art at the Vancouver School Board head offices.  We are so proud of the students' artwork and their inspiring the paragraphs that accompany them.  If you have a chance to check them out, please drop by the school board offices.

Today at the Professional Day, the Wolfe staff attending an amazing lecture from Ms. Andrea Husdon, our resource teacher.  We learned a ton about Executive Functioning.  Miss Kelly and I will be utilizing our learning in the class.  We would also be happy to share!  Here is a beginning...  More videos to come!
