Winter Holidays Fast Approach

What a talented group Division 2 is!?  Congratulations to all our Winter Concert performers.  Our "12 Days of Wolfe-mas," the Wolfe Choir, and the Pop Choir were outstanding.  A special shoutout to our Division 2 soloists: Astrid, Athena, Fiona, Jessica, Ruby, and Ysabelle.  They truly wowed us.

Students received their report cards last Friday.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.  We are happy to discuss it.

Today was our first day of caroling in the halls.  It is one of our very favourite parts of the winter holidays.  Miss Kelly and her lovely sons even joined us this morning.  We would love to invite you all to join us too.  Come and check out our Christmas door at the same time.  You can even leave your child a little note inside their stocking!

Just a few reminders about this week:
Thursday, Dec 17  - Mixed Nuts Field Trip
Friday, Dec 18 - PJ & Stuffie Day, Div 2 Gift Exchange, Gr. 6/7 Dance

If we don't get a chance to see you before the holidays, have a restful break and we will both see you in the New Year!

Happy Hanukkah!

It's the second day of Hanukkah.  The holiday season is truly upon us.  Division 2 is feverishly practicing our contribution to the Winter Concert, "12 Days of Wolfemas."  It's sounding awesome! The performance will be this Thursday at 1pm and 7pm.  All students should be at school by 6:45 to prepare for the show.

Grade 7 students have just started a new Social Studies project.  The following links should help them out as they research:

We also had a fantastic time at the Terry Salman Library last week.  I was so impressed to see our class using the library's online resources and requesting books.  In fact, we may make a visit there a regular thing!  Here are a couple of photos:

Take a peek at the calendar too!

Internet Safety

Division 2 has begun discussing internet safety and digital citizenship.  Students monitored how many strangers they interacted with online over the weekend and we were shocked to discover that some kids in our class interact with close to 100 strangers on a regular basis through online gaming! While we will be talking about 9 ways to stay safe online, please ask your kids about their online habits and especially where they might make contact with strangers.  Check out Common Sense Media for some parent advice about Digital Citizenship.

December 1st marks the beginning of a lot of winter fun!

We continue to work on our biographies.  All kids should have chosen their topic, and we will be heading to the library at Hillcrest on Wednesday to pick up our books.  In science, students are working on their Endangered Animal assignment which is due on Monday the 7th.  Wolfe's Winter Concert is also next week, on Dec 10th.  Division 2 will be participating!  All students will need to be at school at 6:15 that night in order to perform.  It should be fun!

Vision Boards Complete

It's been over a month, but we have finally completed our Vision Boards and they are fantastic!  We are so pleased and impressed with the insight and thoughtfulness the kids demonstrated in their boards.  It's going to be a visionary year!

We also took a look at our Term One goals late last week as we only have two weeks until the end of term one.  Kids have renewed their commitment to meeting their goals and have updated the steps they will take to achieve them.

Here is a photo of our homework board as it stands at the moment.  We have a Children's Librarian from the Vancouver Public Library coming in to teach us how to use the library's resources on Tuesday.  Each child will need a library card and pin number in order to participate.

One addition to the homework board will be a Social Studies 7 assignment that students will receive on Tuesday.  It is exploring the role of geography in the early stages of man and the creation of the first civilizations.  It's going to be pretty interesting.  I will post some links to helpful sites after our lesson tomorrow.
Hope you all have a great week!

Lots on the Horizon

As many units start to come to a close, there are a lot of tests and assignments on the horizon. Coming up this week:

  • Science test tomorrow,
  • Gr. 7 socials studies timeline,
  • Library Card form due Wednesday,
  • Problem Solving Quiz Friday,
  • Grammar Basics test Monday,
  • French Basics test Wednesday.
It's really important that students commit to studying each night this week to prepare.  They can review notes and their textbooks, as well as use sites like quizlet.com to create flashcards.

Welcome Ms. Raino

We are so fortunate to have Ms. Raino as our student teacher this year!  She is in the second week of her first practicum and is teaching about an hour a day this week.  She'll be back again once a week, and then finally, back in the Spring for her long practicum.  The kids are really enjoying having her as part of our community.  She's pretty great!

Over the last week, Ms. Raino and I have been leading the kids in discussions around Remembrance Day.  We were fortunate to host Mr. Weeks and Mr. Purdie, two Canadian Armed Forces members who spoke to the Gr. 6/7 students about heroism and their experiences in the military.  We also spent some time looking at the Canadian Virtual Memorial honouring a number of service people who died in Afghanistan.  It led to a lot of interesting discussions around war, peace, Canadian military involvement, and heroes. We encourage you to ask your child their thoughts.

The following is a photo of our calendar.  Grade 7s are heading to Hamber on Thursday.  Don't forget to drop them off at Hamber, not at Wolfe!

Great Goals!

We set some fabulous goals during conferences last week!  Lots of kids are focusing on using their planners, some are focusing on time management for projects and assignments, and many have reorganised their homework time at home to ensure that at least an hour of homework is done each night as it's so important to set good habits in term one.  Some students have really taken their goals to heart! One student set a goal of exploring art at home for an hour each week and we got this photo:

Wow!  Others kids are diving into the novels they committed to reading, or have started entering that pesky French vocab on quizlet.com.  We have a little over a month to go to achieve our goals, so keep it up!

As promised in those Goal Setting meetings, here is the class calendar so far this week.  Coming up, French skits are due Thursday!

Have a great week!

Optimism and Success

After listening to the acceptance speech of our new Prime Minister, we were inspired by his optimism!  Optimism an important part of learning.  It leads to good mental health and good learning habits.  Students will be practicing optimism by creating Vision Boards for their year goals this week. We can't wait to share them with you at Goal Setting next week.

Check out this neat Ted Talk about The Optimism Bias.

So Many Things to be Thankful For!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend.  We are all so fortunate to have so much to be thankful for.  Miss Kelly and I are thankful to be part of the Wolfe community and to have the privilege of hanging out with the kids of Division 2 everyday!

Over the last couple weeks, thanks to our generous PAC, we have been doing gymnastics in P.E. Miss Kelly issued a challenge to the class, "Get to the top of the rope, and get an automatic "A" in Gymnastics."  You can imagine the response!  Everyone has been trying!  Even Mrs. Soper tried today!  A special congratulations to Noah, Peyton, Jack, Fiona, Astrid, Sebastian, Ruby and Jessica for making it to the top.  Friday is our last chance to try.  Fingers crossed they can get Miss Kelly up there too!

There are some due dates coming up:

  • LA Story Draft due Wednesday, Oct 14
  • HACE Mindfulness Reminder due Thurs, Oct 15
  • Science Yeast Lab due Friday, Oct 16
  • Day I Was Born Project (Gr. 7) due Friday, Oct 16 at 1:10pm
Finally, just a reminder of our upcoming Goal Setting Conferences on Wednesday, Oct  28th and Thursday, Oct 29th.  Hope to see you all there.

Into the Swing of Things!

So, we've had the first Friday Folders... We've had our first science lab, math tests (Grade 6s have their first test on Thursday), and writing assignments. The due dates are starting to pile up and students are starting to have to manage their homework time.  Please be aware that most students will have some math homework every night, and should also be working on some ongoing project work a little each night.   As for any missed assignments that come home on the Friday Folder, that work needs to be completed by the following Monday to avoid receiving a zero grade.

Also, if a student is struggling with his or her homework, we encourage the student to email Miss Kelly or Mrs. Soper and ask for help either online or before school.  This email does not mean the homework is excused, it only avoids a late mark.

One last reminder:
All students need a flash drive at school or access to Google Docs as our VSB computers are very unreliable and we don't want anyone losing their work!

Until next week,

Miss Kelly & Mrs. Soper

Wow!

Stories, stories, and more stories!  Kids have been reading and writing stories all week.  We have looked at what aspects make them great and now we are going to use that information to make ours better.  In Social Studies, Grade 7s have begun "The Day I Was Born" project.  Parents should have signed the project outline. Gymnastics start this week as well!  We are so excited to have this opportunity.  It should be fun!

Don't forget the Walkathon this Friday as well.  And thank you for raising money for a new playground at Wolfe!

Community Building

Today was a pretty great way to end the summer.  It was even nice enough to have music outside!

This week in Division 2, we are continuing to get to know each other.  We are sharing things we enjoy and dislike.  We are discussing connections we've made to stories we are reading in class; and the Grade 7s have even begun a project based on the day they were born.

Part of getting to know each other, is getting to know ourselves.  We will be practicing Mindfulness on regular basis and talking about how our brains work.  Miss Kelly and I encourage you to read about Mindfulness and perhaps even discuss it at home.  This article is a great start!

Welcome Back 2015

Back to school already!?  Summer always seems way to short and at the same, way time too long... Miss Kelly and I are so excited to be back and so very happy about our new class.  It's made up of some new and returning faces (including some siblings of past students).  After day one together, it seems like it's going to be a great year!

Here are a couple quick reminders to help make your year in Division 2 successful:

  • This blog is updated after 9pm on Monday nights.  It will contain information about the class, due dates, assignments, and reminders.
  • Email is the best way to get in touch with both Miss Kelly and Mrs. Soper.
  • A class letter will be given out at the Meet the Teacher night on Wednesday.  A copy will go home with students who did not attend on Thursday.
  • Get enough sleep.  8 - 10 hours.
  • Bring healthy snacks to school.  Students are allowed to snack throughout the day as needed.
We are looking forward to meeting all the new families to our classroom in the coming weeks.  Welcome back to school and welcome to Division 2.

Camp!

Yes, it's finally here!  Camp!  We leave bright and early Wednesday morning, so all kids need to be at school by 8am.  There has also been a lot of questions about packing.  Please refer to the packing list that was sent home and don't forget things like towels and flashlights.  It's going to be an amazing few days!

Students will be emptying their desks and lockers on Monday, so please send them to school with a larger bag and arrange transportation accordingly.

Communication Issues

Before we start, if you receive emails from the school via a Gmail account, you may not be receiving emails from the school.  Gmail has identified the VSB as a potential spammer, so have blocked or slowed our emails.  Please consider using an alternate email address while Gmail corrects the problem.

This week, the Spring Concert is Thursday night at 7pm, dress rehearsal will be at 1pm.  While we are not performing, the Choir, Pop Choir, and Band will be performing.  Gym doors will be open at 6:45 to parents.

A special thank you to the student volunteers who helped with childcare for the Community Appreciation Event.  They were amazing!  Thank you!

Have a great week.

Dance Party in Division 2

Lots of fun in P.E. today as two grade 7 students taught the rest of us a great new dance.  We are so lucky to have so much fun together!  The science projects that were due today look fantastic.  I have learned a lot already!  I am also enjoying marking the Novel Study projects.  For the most part, they are well done.

Your child should have brought home 3 important sheets regarding camp today: a Medical Form, a Behavioral Contract, and a VSB Permission Form. Please read and fill out each form in full and return them to school by the 25th.

Just one final reminder about baby and current photos for all Grade 7 students.  Stepping Up is coming and we'd like to make sure we have everyone in the show!

Mrs. Soper & Miss Kelly

Happy Monday!

Novel Study and French projects were handed in today!  I was very impressed.  Some students opted to take their Novel Study projects home after seeing some of their peer's work.  They will be resubmitting on Wednesday.  The kids continue to work on their science projects which are due in full next Tuesday.  Don't forget to keep the communication open.  If your child runs into trouble or are feeling overwhelmed, encourage them to email Miss Kelly or Mrs. Soper for support.

Sports Day is this Thursday.  Kids were given their teams today.  The intermediate Sports Day will be at Hillcrest if you want to cheer them on.  There will be at 2pm dismissal that day.  Friday, May 15th will be a Professional Day.  Teachers will be working to create school-wide grade level expectations for our math goal.

Finally, Miss Kelly is still waiting for one baby photo and one current photo from each Grade 7 student.  All photos need to be submitted by Friday, May 15th.

It's going to be a great week!

May Days

Its hard to believe that the year is almost over.  Division 2 is working hard on our many projects and assignments.  In fact, we had both a Novel Study and French project work period today and both Maria and I were very impressed with everyone's focus and hard work.  Both projects are due on Monday!  We are looking forward to seeing the finished products.

If you ordered any plants for our Camp Fundraiser this year, they were delivered in classes today.  I ordered the hanging basket and the strawberry plant and they look healthy and full!

In Grade 7 news, students have been asked to email Miss Kelly a baby picture and current photo of themselves by May 15th to use for the Stepping Up slide show.  Like last year, a team of students will be creating the show.

A big thank you to Heather Cohen, Kestel's mom, for coming in to show the kids in both Div. 2 & 3 how to make bath bombs.  It was really neat and I can't wait to try it at home.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents who joined us at the Open House last week.  We love to watch students brag to their parents about something they are proud of at school.  If you weren't able to join us, perhaps ask your child about what they would have shared or drop by another time.

Fingers crossed from more sunshine,

Mrs. Soper & Miss Kelly

Open House this Wednesday

This year, we have changed the format of our Student Led Conferences.  Instead of specific meetings, we have decided to host an Open House on Wednesday, April 29th from 2:30 - 6:30.  It will give you a chance to see some of your child's work, discuss their goals, and even do some math with them!  Thursday will also be an early dismissal day (2:00pm).  We will be having private, one-on-one meetings on that day.  We hope to see you Wednesday!

Things are heating up!

Things are starting to heat up in Division 2!  ACE Reports continue into their third cycle. Novel study is also in full swing.  Students should be reading for 20-30 minutes every night.  All students have a schedule they need to be following to stay on track.  Some students are ahead and have even started their final project.  We will also be starting a science project in the next couple weeks and there is a French project in the future.  It's important for kids to stay on top of things now.  Everyone should be doing 30 minutes of homework every day, with a max of 60 min.  Stay organized and reach out to your teachers if you are feeling overwhelmed.

Optimistic Easter

Hope everyone had a great long weekend!  Last week in Health and Career Education, we discussed Optimism.   The newest research shows that pessimistic thinkers are unable to access their prefrontal cortex fully, because those negative thoughts engage the amygdala.  This term, we are going to focus on positive self-talk, and thinking on the bright side of things - practicing optimism.  Try it for a week, and you will see the difference!  Here's a little song that really fits our view of learning in Division 2:  The Power of Yet

April Fools!

Things are really rolling in Division 2.  Novel study, vertebrates in science, and of course, our Micro-organism Narratives.  Your child should be completing the good copy of this non-fiction narrative this weekend as it is due Wednesday, April 8th and they have had 3 hours of class time to write it. In Health & Career Education, students have set their term 3 goals and we will be talking about optimism.  New research has shown that optimistic learners are able access their pre-frontal cortex easier than their pessimistic peers.  Check out this article about the importance of optimism:

Spring is Here!

Hope everyone had a fantastic Spring Break!  The kids came back energised and refreshed today.  The countdown to summer is on with just over 3 months of school left.  We are starting Independent Novel Studies next week, so your child will need to find an age appropriate book to commit to, and bring it to school with them on Monday.  Miss Kelly will present a number of great books in the library on Wednesday, but we encourage them to look on their own book shelves and at the public library as well.

Tomorrow is also our last skating day!  We will be skating with Divisions 1, and 3 as well.  Bring your skates and helmets.  Thank you to the parents who have come out to help with skates and to join us on the ice as well.

By the end of this week every student in Division 2 will have presented their first A.C.E. Report.  Students have been reading, summarizing, and leading a discussion about a current event each day this week.  We have discussed Bill C-51, the fire at the port, the transportation tax and more.  It's been super interesting and we look forward to the next two weeks of presentations.  The attached link is a follow-up article to one of our discussions.

INVERTEBRATE TEST STUDY GUIDE

The grade 6 test is out of 55 marks while the grade 7 test is out of 65 marks.

Both tests involve choice in some parts.  In the first 4 parts you will have a number of questions and you will be asked to choose which questions you want to answer to total a certain number of marks.  The four sections have a total of 49 possible marks.  Grade 6s will be asked to answer 36 marks worth, grade 7s to answer 39 marks worth. You will have to choose questions from each of the 4 parts.

The fifth section on each test does not involve choice – you have to answer all questions – this section makes up the rest of the marks for the test.  There are a few more questions in this part of the test for grade 7s than there are for grade 6s.

Things you will want to know or be able to do:

·         Look at a picture and identify what phylum that animal belongs to

·         Look at a picture and identify what phylum and class that animal belongs to

·         Grade 7s – identify what order an insect belongs to.

·         Know the phyla, classes, and orders we have talked about in class (sometimes you will have to identify them, sometimes you will just need to recognize the word and know what it means in order to figure out what the question is asking).  There is a list on the back of this sheet and I will accept either the Latin name or the more common English name (in brackets on the list).

·         Know the basic characteristics of animals in each phylum or class (why do scientists group certain animals together)

·         Give examples of animals in each phyla, class, and order

·         Identify differences or similarities between animals in the same or different phyla

·         There may be other things that I am overlooking right now, but this will definitely cover the majority of the test.

Test Breakdown – how many marks are available in the choice sections for each phyla

·         Simple Animals 15 marks possible

·         Echinoderms  and Mollusks 9 marks possible

·         Arthropods  13 marks

·         General Questions or questions involving more than one of the above groups 12 marks total

Science Test on Thursday

With the break coming up on Friday, many units are coming to a close.  Grade 6 students have a math test Wednesday on angles, triangles, and properties of shapes.  Our science unit on invertebrates is also finishing up.  The test on that is Friday.  It's a big test and we suggest that students study a bit each night.  The test will be on the numerous information and worksheets from throughout the term. Kids will have some choice as to which questions they answer on the test, but they will need to answer at least one question in each section. They will also need to be able to identify the phylum and class of an invertebrate from a diagram.  We summarized one of the sheets with visual notes, and many students found this helpful.  This might be a great way to study!

Good luck! Spring Break is 4 days away!

Coming to a Close

Term two comes to an end this Friday.  Miss Kelly and Mrs. Soper have been feverishly writing reports for the last couple weeks.  It's a lot of work, but actually is one of our favourite times of the year.  It's nice to see the progress that students are making, to set goals together, and to have the opportunity to share successes!  Be aware that term two is the most challenging of the year and your child's marks will reflect that.  When you get the reports next week, we encourage you to discuss the results with your child.  Is there anything they are surprised about? What are they most proud of?

Just because this term is ending, doesn't mean we are resting though.  There are a bunch of projects on the go at the moment.  In social studies 7, students are working on a map of Africa and beginning their study of Egypt.  In language arts, we are beginning A.C.E. Reports.  A.C.E. is short for "A Current Event."  Every second week, students will summarize and present a current event article to the class.  The first group starts on Monday!  We are also researching micro-organisms for our non-fiction narrative.  Research is due the week before Spring Break.

Just a reminder about a few things coming up this week:
Wednesday, Feb 25 - Pink Day
Wednesday, Feb 25 - SPCA Bake Sale
Thursday, Feb 26 - Skating

Everybody's Behind!

Sorry for my late post this week.  The focus this week is Math Reflex.  Term 2 is almost over and we still only have 3 students out of 28 who have achieved fluency for basic addition and subtraction facts!  Yikes!  We continue to encourage students to practice Math Reflex at least 3 times a week.  The practice will pay off and you will see the results reflected in all aspects of mathematics and even beyond.  The newest neuroscientific research reinforces the importance of the connection between memorizing math facts, and creating more sophisticated connections between different areas of the brain.  Those connections mean big thinking in all areas!  It's pretty cool stuff - and is great motivation to get online!

Stressed Out!

Hope everyone had a restful Family Day! Division 2 needs it!  I have had a number of emails and conversations with students and parents in the last week about how stressed out everyone is feeling.  We definitely have a lot of things on the go right now.  It is not your imagination that the work seems harder this term.  We are no longer reviewing concepts from last year like in term one.  Term two is all about new information, critcal thinking, and hard work!  But rest assured, there is lots of class time provided for projects; lots of opportunites to ask for help; and lots of consideration behind each project assigned.  You can do it!  Here are a couple of tips to help coach your child through this period:
  • Get enough sleep!  As puberty hits, students need more sleep.  Experts recommend 8-10 hours.
  • Time Management!  Every student should have no more than an hour of homework everyday.  This should be more than enough time to complete the day's unfinished work, the assigned math homework, and work on a chunk of an upcoming larger project.  If your child is doing more or less than this - investigate!
  • Follow-up! Check in with your son or daughter about on-going projects.  Ask them to show you what they are doing.  Review due dates together, especially if your family has a busy schedule.
  • Relax.  Spend some time doing something fun just for nothing.  (After your homework is completed, of course.)

Skating Day!

Just a reminder that tomorrow is our first skating day!  Students must wear helmets on the ice.  There are some provided, but we encourage students to bring their own as well. Both ski and hockey helmets are allowed.

Grade 6s have the first section of their country projects due on Tuesday.  Hopefully you have supported your child in their research.  There is also a science lab due this Wednesday. I have embedded the lab template below.

As Div. 2 starts to really investigate the complex world online, your child may come home with questions, some of which will be hard to answer.  There is an interesting conference being held for parents entitled the "Weird Wired World" on the evening of Thursday, February 19th.  It's at Gladstone High School and is free.  For more information check out this link: http://www.eventbrite.ca/e/weird-wired-world-conference-tickets-6715372861
