Week of May 25th

How quickly things change!  Only one more week until some of our class starts coming to school one day a week!  We are still waiting on details about how things will work for both the kids online and in school, so we will send an email out as soon as we hear.  In the meantime, work doesn't stop!  Here are the assignments for this week:

TO DO:
Time Capsule: Try to complete and submit your seventh entry by Sunday, May 31st please.  See the Literacy Tab for more details.   You should have 7 entries completed by the end of this week.

Novel Study:
a.       This is the last week we will be talking about your novel.  We can’t wait to hear your final thoughts!
b.        This week you will be completing your 3rd assignment.  You need to choose a question from a different section.  Be insightful, creative, and try to wow us!
c.       Just a reminder, if you have a cool way of presenting your assignment, or a better idea for a question, talk to Ms. Kelly or Mrs. Soper and do it!  The goal is to show us how deeply you understand, appreciate, and connect to the various aspects of the story.

Math 7 Ravenclaw/Segers:  Probability Game Assignment due May 27th.

Math 7 Hufflepuff/Jekubik:  Check your Khan Academy accounts to see what's been assigned.  You have several weeks worth of material on there. You are permitted to work ahead, but you must finish the assigned tasks by their due dates. The due dates for the new assignments on KA are correct.

Math 6:
a.       Please watch the attached video before Wednesday's live lesson.  The assignment this week includes 5 Jump math pages and a game sheet.  Please complete the Jump pages and upload them all to your assignment for assessment.  Print off the game page and practice by playing!
b.       Watch the 6 Khan Academy videos and complete the 3 assignments on Converting Decimals & Fractions to Percentages by Friday, May 29th. Make sure you click the “Turn-In” button in Teams Assignments when you are done.
c.       Math Quiz!  Assigned and complete on Monday.  Check the Assignment in Teams.

French: Explore Francophone music!  Choose a French-speaking song and tell us all about it.  Think about why you like it, what it means, and what it tells you about Francophone culture or French speaking countries.  See Assignment for more details.

Gr. 7 Song: While we are unable to compose and create an original song this year due to social distancing, Mr. Mathewson has an amazing idea!  He has created an assignment where each grade 7 student will record a line of a song, and he will put it all together into one.  It’s going to be amazing.  See Assignment for more details.

Gr. 7 Service & Participation Survey: Please complete the Form in Teams by Monday.

Gr. 7 Stepping Up Questionnaire: Ms. Kelly has been cooking up something amazing for Stepping Up.  Your assignment this week is to answer some questions reflecting on your time at General Wolfe and then create a Power Point page to represent those reflections.  Much like the gratitude slide show, design a page that represents your thoughts and personality.  You can include photos, images and words.  Be creative!  See assignment for more details.

Literature Circles 1-Pager

Before Spring Break, the students in Div. 1 participated in a Literature Circle.  Much like a book club, they were assigned readings and participated in discussion about the book.  At the end of the novel, each student had to create a 1-pager that was both visually appealing and communicated their understanding of the deep themes of the novel.  I have finally finished marking them all (getting everything online distracted me a bit!), and I am super impressed!  I wish I had a bulletin board to share them all, but I have emailed a photo and the marking rubric to your child's VSB email.  Please ask them to show it you!

Here are a few samples to wet your appetite!

Week of May 18th

Happy Victoria Day!  Hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend.  I really enjoyed the surprise sunshine.  I'm sure many of you have questions about the government's announcement about going back to school.  We do too!  The district is still working with other Lower Mainland school districts to formulate a plan and they need to have that plan completed and shared by the end of the week.  We are so at excited that we might get to go back, even if it's just for a few days!

Here's a look at our week:

TO DO:
Time Capsule: Try to complete and submit your fifth entry by Sunday, May 24th please.  See the Literacy Tab for more details.   You should have 6 entries completed by the end of this week.

Novel Study:
a.       You should be finishing your book this week!  We will continue to discuss our novels in the Small Group Meetings, so think about what you might want to share.  Use sticky notes, a Reading Power sheet, or even a journal to keep track of your questions, inferences, connections, visualization, and transformation.
b.       This week you will be completing your 2nd assignment.  You need to choose a question from a different section.  Be sure to choose a question that you can answer (for example don’t choose to talk about the ending if you haven’t finished reading yet), and make sure you can share your deep understanding.

Come to Wednesday math class with your idea, design and questions. You should have constructed most of your game by Wednesday. Entire project due for presentation and submission on May 27th.

Math 7 Hufflepuff/Jekubik Check your Khan Academy accounts to see what's been assigned.  You have 3-weeks worth of material on there. You are permitted to work ahead, but you must finish the assigned tasks by their due dates. The due dates for the new assignments on KA are correct.

Math 6:
a.      Please watch the attached video before Wednesday's live lesson.  The assignment this week includes 5 Jump* math pages and a Mrs. Soper's Extra Questions sheet.  Please complete the Jump pages, and upload the Mrs. Soper's Extra's for assessment.  I have also included an extra Jump page that is optional, but good practice.   *Please note: The Jump Pages are photos and therefore don't print well.  Use your judgement, but maybe answer them on a piece of lined paper instead of printing them off.  (Just write the answers.)  If you have the Jump 6.2 at home, they are p. 39-42 and p.43-44 are optional.
b.       Watch the 2 Khan Academy videos and complete the 2 assignments on Dividing Decimals by Friday, May 22nd. Make sure you click the “Turn-In” button in Teams Assignments when you are done.

Career:  Spend some time examining your 1-Pgr and your rubric (sent via email) and set a goal in My Blueprint before Wednesday.  Think about places where you excelled or where you may need to focus while completing your Novel Study assignments.  What Core Competency areas do they relate?

Fine Arts: Cards for Seniors.  Ms. Zheng (one of our kindergarten teachers) volunteers for an organization that connects kids with Seniors.  Since our local care homes are closed to visitors at the moment, her organization is collecting photos of cards, poems, posters, art, videos, etc. to send to the residents of those homes.  Much like we did before the winter holidays, we are asking you to send a message to the Seniors living in isolation.   Your amazing contribution is due on Friday, May 22nd.   See the assignment and the Fine Arts tab in the Class Notebook for more details.

Week of May 11th

A belated happy Mother's day!   A couple of things this week:

1. For those of you heading into the school over the next 2 weeks to clean out your desks and take home your personal belongings, we ask that you also bring back all your library, class library, or textbooks that you have at home as well.  There is a table in the classroom where you can stack them.  Also, check out the pile of classroom lost & found at the front of the room.  😊

2.  We would like to encourage the kids to check into Teams and their email at least once a day, if not twice.  There have been several cases of kids missing meetings or important messages because they didn’t check their email regularly and it’s really the only way we can get in touch with them now!

Have an amazing week!

To Do:

Heritage Fair 2.0:   Please check out the website, look at other people’s projects, and celebrate your success by sharing the website with family.  Complete your Heritage Fair Reflection Sheet in your Teams Assignments by Friday, May 15th.

Time Capsule: Try to complete and submit your fourth entry by Sunday, May 17th please.  See the Literacy Tab for more details.

Novel Study:
a.       We will continue to discuss our novels in the Small Group Meetings, so think about what you might want to share.  Use sticky notes, a Reading Power sheet, or even a journal to keep track of your questions, inferences, connections, visualization, and transformation.
b.       We are starting the Novel Study project today!  The assignment sheet is in the Assignments and on the Class Notebook.  There are 4 categories (Theme, Character, Setting, Plot) and 4 possible assignments for each one.  Each week, you choose a category and one assignment to complete that will be due that Friday.  Think of each assignment like a mini project.  Do your best!  Think deeply!  Be creative!  If you have a cool way of presenting your assignment, or a better idea for a question, talk to Ms. Kelly or Mrs. Soper and do it!  The goal is to show us how deeply you understand, appreciate, and connect to the various aspects of the story.
